WEEK 1 ROUNDUP

11/20/2012 23:56

Group A:

Anybody ever hear of the champions curse? Its alive and kicking in group A after Krad took down last cup’s champs Dribblers 2-0 in the opening week. Da Dribblers put out their usual great team, but could not stand up to the counter attack game up Krad, who put up tremendous defense ratings - with only 4 men in the back! The Dribblers have their work cut out to qualify, and will face next week with an IM redcarded. In the other match, Lezards trounced the Devils in a 6-0 outing. The Lezards could be a force to be reckoned with, but with Dribblers and Krad coming up, their dreams at advancing out of the group look challenging. Devils had better button down the hatches and hope to come away with an underdog win.

Group B

After week one, group B sees Gryffindor on top after a resounding 4-2 win over DOLPH. DOLPH showed impressive attack ratings, and covered their wing defenses very nicely, but could not stop a flood of Gryffindorian goals. In an daring move, FC Plamp came after DVB in an offensive 2-5-3 and ended up tied with the former champs. DVB - who was victim of an upset in week 1 of the last cup - has another tough break and will have to work against very good teams to qualify out of the group. Anything can happen in Group B, with Gryffindor most likely to advance. I give Gryffindor and DVB the best shots at advancing.

GROUP C

Week 1 in Group C resulted in a slugfest between two veteran Dew Cup teams. In a highly anticipated match up, Goombie took the lead 3 minutes in and held on for a while, but Hapuna knocked in goal after goal after goal and the final result was 3-5 Hapuna. With the win, Hapuna looks golden to advance. Goombie could still advance, but will need to win out. In the other matchup Salem Meadows and Tahr tied at 1 all. Tahr showed a high defense while Salem came out more balanced. Both teams look good, and have a shot at qualifying.

GROUP D
A low scoring first week over in group D held some surprises, the biggest being an Ocala-Fulmine tie, 1-1. Fulmine sure looked outclassed on paper, but showed that they are not to be underestimated - especially when you remember that they took out Death Valley Bushwhackers in an underdog win last series. Ocala could still advance out of the group with one of the best teams in the cup though. In the other matchup, an exact repeat of the last cup’s week one match between Tenpool and The Beasts. The Beasts jumped out to an early 0-1 lead after 8 minutes on a SP goal by go-to man Homero and held on for the rest of the match. Tenpool faces a tough break, needing to win out to advance and facing Ocala next week. The Beasts are looking good to advance, but anything can happen with wildcard Fulmine in the
